Sonny D ukuleles, custom made in Hawaii by luthier Sonny D, have been around for a very long time. At the mid to high price range, they’re played by masters Ohta-San, Troy Fernandez and many more. The ukulele pictured is a tenor custom, made with a flamed Koa back and sides, Spruce top, Ebony fret board and Koa molding and inlays. The selection of woods for the body and the neck are beautiful and of the best quality.
The action on this ukulele is a bit too high, and the intonation is slightly sharp as you move up the neck, but not to the point where it is unplayable. This ukulele is microphone friendly but lacking in the low frequencies. Its sound is not as warm at the typical Sonny D, but this is still a good sounding instrument.
This ukulele, although not our first choice for studio work, is more than appropriate for live performances.
